Today, Facebook reminded me that it's Pat Lovitz's birthday. As her picture appeared on my screen, a wave of emotions washed over me. First, I couldn't help but smile back at her infectious grin. Her smile was like a burst of sunshine, lighting up her eyes and making anyone who saw it smile in return. It was as if she had a direct line to our happiness, always knowing how to brighten our day.

Then, sentimentality took over, as my brain nudged my heart with the bittersweet reminder that she is no longer with us. It's a strange mix of joy and longing, celebrating the beautiful moments we shared while wishing for just one more laugh together. But in that moment, I realized something profound: Pat's spirit is still very much alive in our hearts. Her laughter echoes in our memories, her kindness continues to inspire us, and her love remains a guiding light. She left an amazing legacy as a person, a mother, a sister, a teacher, a nurse, and a friend.
Pat had a knack for turning the ordinary into extraordinary, a talent for finding humor in the simplest things. She taught us so much about taking care of others, being compassionate, and a steady lead for what is right. Her nursing company that she consulted for I/DD providers had butterflies on the logo. She wanted to remind us that those we take care of are resilient but strong just like the Monarchs that travel so far every year, but can be so fragile in the same breath. She wanted us to know that we need to advocate for safety but also to let those we care for fly if they can. So today, let's honor her by sharing a smile with someone, telling a silly joke, or simply spreading the joy she so effortlessly gave to us all.
Happy Birthday, Pat. Thank you for the smiles, the laughter, and the inspiration. You may not be here in person, but your spirit continues to shine brightly in our lives. We miss you dearly, but we celebrate the incredible gift of having known you.
